Applications for all the substitute fuels can be found, and some actually offer improved performance in certain instances, their higher prices being offset to some extent eventually by bulk production. However, only hydrogen offers relief from CO2 pollution and even with this fuel oxides of nitrogen would still be produced. Methane is also a greenhouse gas and, although it, in turn, produces CO2, it could be used to advantage as a substitute fuel rather than allowed to escape to the atmosphere. The United States usually produces an average of over 11 million barrels per day of crude oil. In 2020, the U.S. averaged 11.2 million barrels per day, with this figure increasing to 11.6 million in 2021.

Production ratios are used in business and government to show how a particular product or factor is performing. For example, summer-to-winter production ratios are used on dairy farms to evaluate the effectiveness of new management practices. A ratio higher than 1 means that production has increased and a ratio below 1 means that production has decreased. The distribution of China’s coal resources is very uneven, with over 80% located in the north and northwest of the country. 13.1, however, the main consumption areas are in the east and south, meaning that there is great discord between production location and area of demand. Based on the distribution and availability of energy resources, it is clear that coal will be kept as China’s dominant energy source for some coming years.
